Addressed to Peking No.19 March 18th, repeated to
Foreign Office telegram No.6 Tour.
Forecast of attitude of Chinese authorities at
date is difficult when removal of Chinese residents is
planned to take place namely at the end of 1934. I feel,
however, that grounds for raising any agi
agitiation would dis-
appear to a great extent by a letter sent by me to Inspector
General of Foreign Affairs informing him of necessity of
removal and of very generous terms offered to owners as
described in Governor of Hong Kong's confidential despatch
to the Secretary of State for the Colonies dated the 9th
January,1934. Such reply would avoid any reference to the
question of jurisdiction.
The only reply sent up to now was
a letter on August 4th stating that Governor of Hong Kong was
investigating the matter. The Inspector General has not
referred to the case since that date and he is pro bably
under the impression that removal will not take place.
